Airport Lighting

An airport is a complex system with many different lighting tasks and corresponding requirements for lighting technology. The infrastructure of airports includes, among other things, the airfield and the apron. Here there are a wide variety of luminaires. These are, for example, the lighting systems (parkway, runway, taxiway). Furthermore, there are roadway signs, such as information and instruction boards, and the lighting or illumination of aircraft parking areas on the apron.

Here, luminance and uniformity are important. The criterion for uniformity is the contrast between the minimum and maximum luminance. These tasks can be performed in the workshops, during maintenance work, recommissioning, and on-site at the airfield. The imaging luminance measurement technique is excellently suited for these tasks since only one measurement image is required.

Evaluation of aircraft parking area illumination
A critical issue for the operational safety of airports is the sufficient illumination of aircraft parking areas. Due to weather conditions in winter and construction works on the ground surface, the airfield lighting system must be constantly adapted. These works are connected with the continuous testing and acceptance of the achieved lighting quality.
